Hi, this is a competition based on your personal taste in X-Related characters.

Every morning, I will submit a daily theme. The contestants' job is to make a list of their favorite characters that fit into that theme. They will PM me their lists within 24 hours of the theme's posting.

A panel of judges who have not been decided yet (not me, I have terrible taste) will comment on each list.

After the judges have commented (that part may be too complicated and might go away), the public will vote for the best of the day. The following day a contestant will be ELIMINATED.

Voting will be posted, not polled.

Claremont’s original vision was vastly different to how the character eventually turned out. Here’s Claremont on how he envisioned it.

"Dave Cockrum and I were over ideas and what we were coming towards was a mysterious young boy - apparently an 11-year-old - at the orphanage where Scott (Cyclops) was raised, who turned out to be the secret master of the place. In effect what we were setting up was a guy who was aging over a lifespan of roughly a thousand years. Even though he looked like an 11-year-old, he'd actually been alive since the mid-century at this point - he was actually about 50. He had all the grown up urges. He's growing up in his mind but his body isn't capable of handling it, which makes him quite cranky. And, of course, looking like an 11-year-old, who'd take him seriously in the criminal community? So he built himself an agent in a sense, which was Mr. Sinister, that was, in effect, the rationale behind Sinister's rather - for want of a better word - childish or kid-like appearance. The costume... the look... the face... it's what would scare a child. Even when he was designed, he wasn't what you'd expect in a guy like that."

You can see the fruition of Claremont’s Sinister in X-men forever at the moment. This thread focuses on the 616 version.
Magneto Loves Power... Why Isn't He Successful In Recruitin

You'd think that over the years in being in the game, he'd try harder to get in the graces of some of the more powerful mutants out there.

You'd think that over the years in being in the game, he'd try harder to get in the graces of some of the more powerful mutants out there. If there's anyone that believes in taping into raw potential it's Magneto. And during his short stint on Utopia, he's done some extrordinary feats, one of which that involved him pinpointing the exact location of "the bullet", and bringing it back from the far reaches of space to save Kitty Pryde. And rather than her being eternally grateful or receiving any praise from the X-Men, he still get the same disrespect that he received when he was a hardened criminal.

Feats like that, and others from his past should be a calling card for some of the more powerful X-Men that wish to develop their powers, or use their abilities in a variety of ways that's more beneficial for their cause and everyone. Instead, his approach to recruiting powerful mutants seems to vary with each X-Character he sees potential in. And as always, it ends up with them refusing his offer to join his cause, because of the way he goes about it.

Surge was a good example of that, when he started turning up her voltage without her permission. Although he meant well, it's blunders like that - that seems to set him back. The same goes for Hellion, when they had that brief exchange in the infirmary while he was conversating with Hope. You'd think he'd be a little more sensetive to Julian's recent and life changing amputations, rather than giving him an intimidating STFU moment. Even with the other powerful mutants such as Jean, Bobby, Storm, and some of the other students with great potential. He hasn't exactly opened himself up or shown any interest in their well being or thoughts to what's going on. Nor is it even known if he respects them at all.

Magneto's clearly an intelligent and powerful man, with some great attributes and life lessons that could be transferred to a lot of his equally powerful, younger peers in this tougher, mutant hating society... But his people skills definitely need some work...

Let's say Marvel were going to do a universe reboot for their main titles, or possibly do another line like Ultimate or Marvel Adventures. They put you in charge of the new X-Men title. It is still set in a larger Marvel universe, with other heroes, adventures, etc., but other than that you have carte blanche.

If you got this opportunity, what would your premise be?

Here are some guiding questions: Who would be on the team? Would there only be one team? Who would they fight? What sort of stuff would they deal with? Would there be any notable changes to any existing characters?

We've seen various re-imaginings of the X-Men, with altered realities like AoA, animated series, and outside-main-continuity stuff like Ultimate X-Men and X-Campus. But what would you do?

What a momentous issue! Packed with thrilling escapades and strong characterisation. Well, not really, because only two of the page-long origins sequences presented here had the main characters speak. But it was an interesting read, and a lot of things were presented in the stories which could be the basis for an extended online argument. That one or two characters got labelled 'omega' for example, or the way the Jean Grey and Hope stories appear to completely counteract each other. The best thing, though, was seeing the tiny cameos and the ways in which writers like Duane Swierczynski and Jason Aaron attempted to fit all of Cable and Wolverine's backstories into about five panels. Some writers managed this better than others - Psylocke's origin makes no sense, while Armour's page struggles to find anything to say about her. Anyway! These are what were in this.

Professor X - Mike Carey, Mick Bertilorenzi. Struggles to get all of Xavier's story onto one page, and ends with the suggestion that he's still stuck in his wheelchair. Feat a Sunfire cameo!!

Magneto - Mike Carey, Nick Bradshaw. No mention of Polaris.

Cyclops - Chris Yost, Brian Ching.

Iceman - Peter David, Pablo Raimondi. Omega!! Moondragon appears, and so do The Champions and Mystique.

Archangel - James Asmus, Tom Raney. So sign of that little girl from the Adam Pollina series that RoguishGurl likes :(

Beast - James Asmus, Salva Espin. Would've expected Mike Carey to write this one, but maybe even he's turned off Beast by now. Shows Beast's evolution and devolution over the years, and has Moon Knight in it.

Jean Grey - Chris Yost, Jill Thompson. Pretty art! Doesn't even try to explain the Phoenix/Jean thing, which is sensible.

Havok - Peter David, Stephen Segovia. Crams a lot of stuff in, and says that he's still currently in space and not on Earth. So don't expect him to return soon, Havok fans :(

Wolverine - Jason Aaron, Renato Guedes. Poor Jason Aaron. He does a great job of fitting as much as possible into the page. This one page is probably better than the entirety of Wolverine: Origins, in fact.

Storm - Mike Carey, Terry Dodson. States that Storm prefers the X-Men to T'Challa.

Rogue - Mike Carey, David Lopez. Of course Mike Carey picked this one!

Colossis - James Asmus, David Yardin. Starting to think that James Asmus really likes the X-Men. Perhaps he should be given more X-Men stories to write?? He even fits in a little BAMF doll cameo.

Kitty Pryde - Chris Yost, Jill Thompson. The best bit is Thompson's barely-visible thanks at the bottom to John Byrne, Terry Austin; for creating her favourite character.

Psylocke - James Asmus, Harvey Tolibao. One of the most dynamic pages, which helps because Psylocke is indecipherable.

Cannonball - Mike Carey, Bob McLeod. Featuring Icarus!

Magik - James Asmus, Leonard Kirk. Again, it makes sure to skip over the tortured-in-hell thing, which is understandable.

Karma - James Asmus, Leonard Kirk. Strange to pick her instead of Dani Moonstar, but she's more interesting so. Phat Karma appears..

Cable - Duane Swierczynski, Dave Wilkins. With Shatterstar and Domino and all that. A typically strong page.

Domino - Chris Yost, Gabriel Del'Otto. Del'Otto artwork!

Deadpool - Fred Van Lente, Paco Medina. Surprisingly, probably one of the better pages. But he's NOT an X-Man! Sigh.

Gambit - Mike Carey, Leonard Kirk.

Jubilee - Marjorie Liu, Reilly Brown. With Generation X cameo and a reference to New Warriors.

Emma Frost - Valerie D'Orazio, Mark Brooks. I liked it, but I dunno what y'all would think. No Sage appearance.

Northstar - Mike Carey, David Yardin. Has a joke at the end! Fancy that. Alpha Flight appear. Who are Alpha Flight?

Madrox - Peter David, Pable Raimondi. Personal fanservice for Justin K!

Pixie - Mike Carey, Sara Pichelli. Probably the best one of the lot, alongside Cable. No bicycle helmet, though.

Fantomex - Jason Aaron, Eric Canete. Didn't read this one.

Armor - James Asmus, Gabriel Hernandez Walta. Interesting to see how Walta is a big fan of the character. But it also shows how Marvel have given her bugger-all backstory or motivation over the past few years. Asmus doesn't have much to write about!

Danger - Simon Spurrier, Stephen Segovia. This was a good one, detailing her numerous failures over the years.

X-23 - Craig Kyle & Chris Yost, Phil Noto. Obviously good, because all X-23 is, is an origin story. The art were nice.

Daken - Marjorie Liu & Daniel Way, Giuseppi Camuncoli. The new costume looks good for perhaps the first time.

Namor - James Asmus, Terry Dodson.

X-Club - Simon Spurrier, Phil Noto. No sign of Japanese Guy.

Hope - Duane Swierczynski, Jamie McKelvie. Another great page to finish with.

Wasn't this great!! I'd say the only main omissions were Bishop, Banshee and Nightcrawler.
We should do this again sometime with Origins of Marvel Comics II: X-Men D-List.
